Ell

Ell – Where the great intellectuals met

The Colpach Castle was the stronghold of art and literature during the early 20th century. The owner, Aline Mayrisch-de Saint-Hubert, welcomed anyone of great rank and distinction into her international circles of intellectuals. Nowadays, you can admire the works of important sculptors such as Maillol or Bourdelle in the castle park, where the witty conversations of the past still seem to reverberate. The Lady of the castle and her husband, the steel-plant director Emile Mayrisch were avid art collectors.

Not that far away, on the Belgian-Luxembourgish border, you will find a completely different, rather wild scenery. Via an educational trail over wooden footbridges, you can explore the nature reserve of Grendel. A mulch path invites you to a romantic promenade between the towns of Roodt and Colpach. The cross-border hiking trail requires a little more perseverance. On its 12 kilometers, it features natural and cultural sites and connects the Luxembourgish villages Niedercolpach and Klein-Elcheroth to the Belgian side of Nothom and Grendel.

In addition, the proud rural municipality Ell is perfectly suitable for wonderful cycling off the beaten tracks.
